I first met Andy as one of my tutors for the BWF Level Two coaching course. He demonstrated an entirely novel way of coaching that I had been completely unaware of during my short coaching career and long playing life.
The scales fell from my eyes. Has Andy discovered the Higgs-Boson of Badminton coaching?
Andy’s method seemed to be the dark matter of coaching – coaching discovered by splitting the atoms of methods I had learnt of feeding and repetition, of routines and rotations. Gone were the cast-iron instructions and the cajoling, replaced by reflective pauses and questions that allowed the athlete to tease answers from their own experience, to find solutions deep within themselves.
The tone of learning was one of cooperation and consideration, the pace was relaxed and specific to the learning. Instruction was understated and thoughtful, allowing the athlete the space for self-analysis and learning. I think this could be my passport to coaching players to a higher standard of play than my own.
I recently had a very specific technical query that I wanted reassurance with. Andy gave me some very useful information, which helps me greatly and reassured my doubts.
I’d previously met Andy a long time back at a tournament in Barcelona.
It was great to be able to reach out even after around 10 years; he is a very approachable and knowledgeable coach.

I met Andy during a BWF Level 1 coaching course in South Wales. From the get-go, Andy was happy to share his vast experience of coaching knowledge.
